Experts Advocate Robotic Surgery To Ease India’s Disease Burden

On the occasion of World Health Day, experts from the India chapter of the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association (CRSA) have emphasised the need for greater adoption of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in the Indian healthcare system. They underline the dual advantage of this advanced technology: improved surgical outcomes and enhanced patient comfort.

“Robotic-assisted surgery is not just about achieving successful surgical outcomes; it is also about how we get there,” said Dr. Vivek Bindal, Chairman, CRSA India, and Head of the Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric and Robotic Surgery at Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi. “Patients today seek a seamless experience with minimal disruption to their lives. RAS provides just that—reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and faster recovery times,” he added.

Highlighting the technological edge of systems like the da Vinci robot, Dr. Bindal noted the reduction in perioperative bleeding, smaller incisions, and a lower likelihood of surgical site infections. “These systems improve infection control and surgical efficiency while ensuring hospital workflow continuity, especially important in today’s high-demand healthcare environment,” he said.

Dr. Jagadishwar Goud, CRSA member and leading surgical oncologist at Apollo Hyderabad, stated, “RAS plays a crucial role in procedures where organ preservation and functional retention are paramount. In specialties such as oncology, urology, and gynaecology, robotic systems enable surgeons to operate with high precision, preserving healthy tissue and improving functional outcomes.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Surender Dabas, CRSA member and Senior Director & HOD – Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery at Max Healthcare, New Delhi, noted that robotic-assisted cancer surgeries improve both patient and surgeon experiences. “Surgeons benefit from enhanced visualisation and reduced fatigue. These advances enable minimally invasive cancer procedures that protect vital functions like speech and swallowing, particularly in head and neck surgeries,” he explained.

Dr. Dabas further added that RAS accelerates wound healing, allowing patients to transition faster to additional therapies like chemotherapy or radiation without delays, thereby improving the overall efficacy of treatment plans.

Discussing post-operative recovery, Dr. Bindal highlighted that robotic-assisted surgery leads to reduced ICU stays and fewer complications. “A smoother recovery helps patients and caregivers focus more on emotional well-being rather than prolonged medical challenges,” he said.

As healthcare becomes more patient-centric, experts agree that robotic-assisted surgery aligns with modern expectations, where healing is defined not just by results, but by comfort, efficiency, and a more dignified treatment experience.
